Clan Mothers

Picture
Iroquois Clan Mother
Clan mothers were the leaders of each clan. They chose the chiefs and ensured that the roles of the chiefs were being upheld by the men in those positions. In order for someone to become a clan mother they had to have an ancestor that was a clan mother as well.
Clan mothers are held to the highest level of respect with the Iroquois Confederacy.
